The Poisoned Pen Stings
It must have been around '89 when your big idea was the same as mine
A wild dream of a bigger slice of a life that for others proved oh so nice
You must have had great faith in what you could do and knew that others just could not
Something special that would rise above the clutches of a city that you've always loved
Must have been around '92 when my disenchantment was the same for you
As you sat home eating humble pie and watched the bigger slice of life pass you by
After all the years of tears and sweat you hadn't even scratched the surface yet
Slipping slowly to your sell-by date, forgotten by a city that you grew to hate
But now you can open your eyes and you've got stars
Dancing around on the top of your head
You open your mouth and you've got hacks
Scribbling down everything that you've said
I hope it lives on all that sweet innocence trumpeted as honest and clean
I hope it won't hurt when that all fades and the poisoned pen stings
Something happened then in '93 things were looking very bad for me
Chance had suddenly come up to you, smiled as all your wildest dreams came true
Now as I watch you in that far off place, eyes wide and smiling in a happy face
Just look down at your feet and see the likes of you still fighting with the likes of me
